And now for a completely different kind of poetry—ancient Athenian drama from the 5th century BCE. We will read three powerful plays, Sophocles’ so-called Theban trilogy: Antigone, Oedipus the King, and Oedipus at Colonus. Some of our discussion may consider tragedy’s ancient context, though we will inevitably look at each work in our own contemporary context, as they deal with unchanging fundamentals of the human condition.
